New Electoral District of Chéticamp–Margarees–Pleasant Bay:

The Fédération acadienne de la Nouvelle-Écosse Welcomes a Historic Step Forward

Dartmouth, March 2, 2026 — The Fédération acadienne de la Nouvelle-Écosse (FANE) welcomes the tabling, on February 26, of a bill in the Nova Scotia Legislative Assembly to create a new exceptional electoral district called Chéticamp–Margarees–Pleasant Bay.

This new electoral district would increase the Francophone demographic weight to 35.9%, compared to 10.6% in the former electoral district of Inverness. This change represents an important step toward more equitable representation for the Acadian community of Chéticamp.

With this new configuration, the community will have a greater opportunity to elect a French-speaking Member of the Legislative Assembly or, at the very least, a representative who is attentive to the specific needs of the region as an Acadian community, with a language, culture, and traditions dating back to 1785.

Furthermore, the entire County of Inverness will benefit from improved representation with two Members: one representing the new Chéticamp–Margarees–Pleasant Bay district and another representing the remainder of the county. Although the creation of this new electoral district does not guarantee the election of a representative from Chéticamp, it will certainly allow for fairer and more balanced representation. FANE also hopes that this initiative will help further strengthen ties among the communities of Chéticamp, the Margarees, and Pleasant Bay.

“February 26, 2026, marks a historic day for the community of Chéticamp and surrounding areas,” stated FANE President, Denise Comeau-Desautels. “We look forward with great optimism to the upcoming election of a new representative for the region!”

This beautiful region deserves a strong voice in the Legislative Assembly, and FANE will continue to defend the interests of Acadians in Nova Scotia.
